A new program for the Town of Cutler Bay’s Parks and Recreation Department began on Saturday, Jan. 23, with the beginning of monthly guided kayak tours at the newly completed canoe/kayak launch at Lakes by the Bay Park.
Conducted by local Cutler Bay business Nature Postings, the tours will explore the 23-acre lake next to the park. To celebrate the new launch, tours on Jan. 23 were free to registered participants. Tours for all other months will be $10 per person, non-refundable, and on a first come, first served basis.
On Dec. 20, 2020, a canoe/kayak launch, along with three pavilions and other amenities were opened formally at the park. In a virtual grand opening video posted by the town, Mayor Tim Meerbott announced the opening and invited residents to come out for the new kayak tours.
“We officially opened the launch and it’s open from sunrise to sunset,” Mayor Meerbott said.
“We originally planned to have a great grand opening and have everyone come out, but with the current state of the pandemic we decided to postpone that. But we didn’t want to hold it back from anyone enjoying this great new amenity.”
To access the canoe/kayak launch, you may go through the entrance located on SW 85th Avenue (south of SW 212th Street) or you may park at Lakes by the Bay Park (8551 SW 216 St.) and take the short trail located at the north end of the parking lot.
Things to note about the tours in February and following months:
● Limited to 10 people per tour (This may increase in the future if COVID-19 restrictions ease.);
● Two tour times will be available each month: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon;
