Officers from the Palmetto Bay Policing Unit and Community Education conducted the village’s yearly Police Night Out event at Coral Reef Park on Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Resource Fair featured booths with information about Crime Watch, radKids and Community Education. There also was music, tennis and lawn games, and free hot dogs, popcorn, frozen lemonade and cotton candy.

Mayor Karyn Cunningham attended, as did Vice Mayor Leanne Tellam and Councilmember Steve Cody.

“National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie,” Mayor Cunningham said. “In the Village of Palmetto Bay, the evening highlights our amazing Community Policing Unit and allows the opportunity for our community to learn more about crime prevention awareness, generate support for participation in local anticrime programs like Crime Watch and just enjoy each other’s company. COVID has really shown how important our neighbors are in helping us cope during difficult times.”

National Night Out, which took place first in 1984, is a community-police awareness-raising event in the United States that is held the first Tuesday of August. It was developed as a crime prevention program that emphasizes building a partnership between the police and the community through a variety of local events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, contests, youth activities and seminars.
