A Nebraska fan cheers on his team during a 24-17 victory over the Miami Hurricanes in the 1995 Fed Ex Orange Bowl. Nebraska’s sports teams are known as the Cornhuskers. But did you know the university’s sports teams were originally known as the Bugeaters?  The original nickname came from Nebraska’s numerous bull bats (Chordeiles minor), called bugeaters because they fed on bugs. The name was also apt because of the “poverty-stricken appearance of many parts of the state.” Nebraska eventually changed its name to the Cornhuskers in 1900. Its mascot is Herbie Husker, who represents a burly, rugged and confident fellow who is proud of both the athletic and the agricultural traditions of the University of Nebraska. Today, most Nebraska fans refer to their teams as simply the Huskers.
From the 1960s to the 1990s, Nebraska fans were frequent visitors to South Florida during the holidays. Nebraska has played in 17 Orange Bowl games. Only Oklahoma has played in more. Four of Nebraska’s five national championships have been won at the Orange Bowl. To read more stories about the Orange Bowl, visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ghostsoftheorangebowl
