Palmer Trinity School (PTS) recently announced the creation of the Patrick H.F. Roberts Global Learning Endowment Fund. The endowment fund of $250,000 is designed to help PTS faculty and staff cover the cost of their global education development.

The funding for the Patrick H.F. Roberts Global Learning Endowment Fund was generated by a generous gift from Dr. Manjula Salomon, past associate head of school for Academic Affairs and Global Scholar in Residence as well as several families who earmarked donations for professional development.

Before she retired, Dr. Salomon wanted to both leave a legacy at PTS and at the same time honor Patrick Roberts for his unwavering support and contributions towards global studies.

“Palmer Trinity is a global school, and global education has never been more important,” Salomon said. “This endowment will ensure that Palmer Trinity’s exceptional faculty and staff will have the means to continue their education in a dynamic way.”

The vision for the fund is:
• To celebrate faculty and staff as life-long learners;
• To cultivate global exposure and aid in the development of global mindsets for faculty and staff;
• To provide financial support to full-time PTS faculty and staff who require travel to enrich their education and to help advance their teaching, and
• To improve their students’ global learning experience.

“I’m truly honored to be the namesake of this important fund,” said Patrick Roberts, head of school at Palmer Trinity. “Global competency is not an option but an imperative in today’s world. This investment will not only enhance our faculty and staff’s teaching skills but will ultimately affect our students in a profound way.”

Recipients will be faculty and staff who have displayed a deep commitment to excellence in their field and have applied and selected where they would like to have their global education development.

This year’s recipients are Leo Llinas, chair of the Science Department (Netherlands) and Laura Massa, chair of the History Department (Guatemala).

Because the Netherlands shares much in common with South Florida regarding water management and sea level rise, Llinas selected this location to understand how countries can adapt and mitigate the challenges posed by extreme weather events.

Massa proposed travel to Guatemala to expand collaboration with MAIA Impact School, an NGO that successfully takes a holistic approach to educating indigenous girls in rural Guatemala despite tremendous challenges.
