New World School of the Arts (NWSA), in partnership with Deering Estate, presents Deering Impressions on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Deering Estate Theater. Guests can enjoy the screening of some of the short films created by students in the Fall 2023 film class taught by professors Alisa Pitchenik-Charles and Tony Fernandez. The films selected are collateral programming that is thematically related to Interlocking Dimensions: Eco-Art at the Deering Contemporary, the current exhibition at the Deering Estate, and include film foundation exercises and other projects by students in the class. This programming expands the vision of this exhibition to showcase students’ perspectives and expressive abilities through film.

Deering Impressions 1 and 2 is comprised of 20 short films, two from each student that span narrative, experimental, and documentary films created in the NWSA ART+TECH class Advanced Projects: Video Film under the direction and guidance of Professors Alisa Pitchenik-Charles and Tony Fernandez, who have team-taught the course together at NWSA college for over a decade.

Upon the invitation of Deering Cultural Arts Curator Liliam Dominguez, the class received an orientation tour, met and interviewed tour guides and Deering Estate’s Artists-in-Residence (AIR), and filmed on-site at Deering, exploring various themes and genres spanning comedy, horror, drama, and insightful documentaries tied to the Deering AIRs exploring Eco-Art. As an introductory film course, selected outstanding preliminary film shorts and cinematography explorations at Deering were included in the compilation to show the progression of learning film basics and the diverse technical and aesthetic creativity of the students’ approach to filmmaking.

The students’ exposure to the Deering estate grounds and the philosophy that Deering committed to the arts and environment left an indelible mark on the emerging student artists and filmmakers as they were creating their films on-site and themselves becoming a part of the fabric and legacy of artists who have worked there.

The reception and screening of the films is on Sunday, January 28, at 2 p.m. at the Visitor Center Theater. A Q&A is to follow where the public can ask the professors and students questions facilitated by Deering Curator Liliam Dominguez. The program is free with RSVP online

The Deering Contemporary exhibition program includes screenings and workshops by some of the exhibiting artists. All events in the program are FREE with RSVP on EventBrite. The exhibition is on display daily through March 24, 2024, and is included with general admission.
