At the start of hurricane season last week, the world was reminded of Haiti’s weakened and vulnerable infrastructure as torrential rains caused deadly floods to ravage its regions, leaving behind a growing death toll, missing and injured persons, and even thousands of displaced residents. This latest calamity is again exacerbated by its ongoing struggle with political turmoil, gang violence, and its significant dependence on humanitarian aid. As a result, local North Miami residents are once again expressing concern and continuing their outcry for help for the country, for their loved ones on the decimated island. North Miami Mayor Alix Desulme, Ed.D., is fielding these calls and hearing constituent concerns as he too shares their grief and desire for the country’s advancement.

“North Miami has the largest concentration of Haitian residents in South Florida,” Mayor Desulme explained. “So, when Haiti hurts the City of North Miami feels the pain and must reinforce its solidarity with the people of Haiti.”

Mayor Desulme went on to state, “It is times like these that we are reminded of the need to invest in Haiti and help it develop a self-sustaining ability to weather storms like these and not have a heavy rainfall cause such heightened loss of life, shelter and even crops. This ecological damage and weak infrastructure reinforce the need for the international community to extend the same level of support to the country as it has extended to other countries across the globe. If we can help heal Haiti, we can save a population of people with the U.S. government at the forefront.”

As the immediate past chairperson of National Haitian American Elected Officials Network (NHAEON) and a longtime resident of North Miami, Mayor Desulme concluded by reinforcing his request to the nation and international communities for socioeconomic investment in Haiti and imploring American leaders to dedicate resources to such a needed investment.
