Ocaquatics Swim School and the Village of Palmetto Bay at the beginning of the school year continued an annual partnership to assist students in the area with needed school supplies and backpacks.

Ocaquatics gathered school supplies donated by parents who are part of the swim school family, the village donated backpacks and members of the Village Policing Unit helped distribute the filled backpacks.

On Aug. 16 the team visited Howard Drive Elementary at 8:45 a.m., Coral Reef Elementary at 9:15 a.m., Southwood Middle at 9:45 a.m. and Dr. Henry Perrine Academy of the Arts at 10:15 a.m.

“We’re so excited to again participate with the school supply drive this year with Palmetto Bay,” said Miren Oca, owner of the swim school system. “Unfortunately, there are children who do not have access to the resources necessary to realize their full potential. We’re pleased to have the opportunity to help all students get off to a successful start to the school year.”

Mayor Karyn Cunningham also was pleased with the effort and the opportunity to assist area schools. A former schoolteacher, Mayor Cunningham has a special affinity for students and their needs.

“Proud to have partnered for the eighth year with Ocaquatics to put backpacks in our schools for families to start the year right,” Mayor Cunningham said. “Our community continues to shine with compassion and care — the hallmark of our beautiful Village of Palmetto Bay.”

Miren Oca, the daughter of immigrant parents, founded Ocaquatics Swim School to be an agent of change in her community and to work to help prevent drownings in an area that has so many waterways, lakes and pools.

The five Ocaquatics locations are: Eureka, 11101 SW 176 St.; Kendall, 13408 SW 131 St.; Coral Gables, 59 Merrick Way; Tropical, 4950 SW 75 Ave., and Northwest, 10502 NW 134 St., Hialeah Gardens.
