Online Tool Puts You In Control of the Budget

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

An interactive tool puts you in charge of the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Proposed Budget, allowing you to boost or reduce funding for departments and more.

Balancing Act is citizen engagement tool that helps residents better understand the budget process while promoting financial transparency and accountability. It captures users’ input and recommendations for a balanced — or unbalanced — FY 2024 Proposed Budget, and that feedback will be shared prior to the September 2023 Public Hearings when the City Commission will adopt the rates and budget for FY 2024.

This tool allows you to interact with a model of the FY 2024 Proposed General Fund Budget, where you can:

  • Increase or decrease department allocations,
  • Include or remove departments’ decision package requests, and
  • Adjust policy-driven revenue sources (for example, the City’s property tax rate or the Fire Assessment Fee).

Not only does Balancing Act immerse neighbors in the inner workings of the budgeting process, it also offers transparency on where the money comes from and where it goes. A simulation prepared by the City’s Office of Management and Budget prepared a simulation that includes all budget modification requests submitted by City departments and shows which requests are included in the FY 2024 Proposed Budget.
