OpusCare of Florida is proud to announce the opening of its first freestanding in-patient hospice care facility serving Miami-Dade County. The decision to build the facility came in response to growing concern throughout the Miami-Dade County area about the lack of care settings for the terminally ill. This facility will allow OpusCare to continue its mission of providing the highest quality compassionate care at an even greater scale.
“This new in-patient facility will be a gamechanger in hospice care for our community,” said Dr. Ismael Roque-Velasco, President and CEO of OpusCare. “We look forward to providing our patients, families and caregivers a dedicated facility with all the amenities to create a home like setting where comfort and dignity is at the forefront.”
The facility will feature 13 private suites with full bathrooms for patients and their families, along with a meditation garden, a multi-denominational chapel, an education center, family gathering space, and a centralized nurse station in the middle of the patient rooms for greater supervision. Dedicated areas will be used for counseling, spiritual, and bereavement services as well.
OpusCare will also hire approximately 30 new staff members to work in the facility, ranging from physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, certified nursing assistants, maintenance and cleaning staff, bereavement counselors, social workers, and chaplains, among others. At the forefront of this facility is a focus on providing patients with the best end-of-life care available. The team has received hospice-specific training to provide innovative solutions and care plans for treating the terminally ill.
Rising demand and the need for expanded options for hospice care within the community were driving forces behind the new home-like facility. OpusCare of Florida began the application process for the certificate of need with the state of Florida and the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) in 2017 and was awarded the first certificate of need for a freestanding hospice facility in Miami-Dade County. OpusCare chose the Village of Palmetto Bay as the ideal location for its facility because of their geographical location and proximity to major hospitals. They received approval to being construction in 2019 and broke ground in May of 2020.
