Orson Mobley: Palmetto’s Man of All Seasons

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Florida State tight end Orson Mobley is pictured scoring a touchdown during a 24-7 victory over the Miami Hurricanes in 1982 at the Orange Bowl. A 1981 graduate of Miami Palmetto High School, Mobley is one of the greatest all around high school athletes to ever come out of Miami-Dade County. Like Bo Jackson, he could play any sport and dominate. The 6-foot-5, 235 pound Mobley was All Dade County in football, baseball and basketball. Although baseball was his best sport in high school, his huge physique was more suited for football.

Highly recruited, Mobley chose to attend Florida State on football scholarship and also played baseball. He played sparingly as a tight end his first two years at FSU and caught just one touchdown pass. It happened to come in a 24-7 victory over the University of Miami at the Orange Bowl in 1982. But off the field, Mobley was struggling in the classroom. He flunked out of school. He later enrolled at tiny Salem College in West Virginia, then coached by Terry Bowden. It was at Salem, where Mobley’s combination of size and speed caught the attention of NFL scouts.

Mobley was drafted in the 6th round by the Denver Broncos in 1986. He went on to play 5 seasons in Denver and played in 3 Super Bowl games. Mobley currently resides in Jacksonville, where he works in the security industry and is also a uniform inspector for the NFL.
