Palmer Trinity School hosts visit by Holocaust survivor
Holocaust survivor David Schaecter shares his powerful story with students.

Palmer Trinity School (PTS) had the recent honor of hosting Holocaust survivor and esteemed community member, David Schaecter, as a guest speaker during its event for Jewish Heritage Month.

Schaecter, 94, greeted students with warm hugs as he shared his story and recounted the horrors he endured, including torture, at Auschwitz and three other Nazi concentration camps in the 1940s. He emphasized how students had an important role to play in preventing antisemitism.

“It was critical for our students to hear Mr. Schaecter’s firsthand account of events during the Holocaust, especially as we see this generation’s numbers dwindling,” stated Patrick Roberts, head of school. “They are also witnessing similar issues in the world today so it was a reminder that they can have an impact by being a positive force for change.”

Born in Czechoslovakia in 1929, Schaecter was 11 years old when he was taken in a cattle car to Auschwitz along with his mother, two younger sisters and older brother. He was the lone survivor of a large family of 105 as he managed to escape the Germans during an attack by Allied troops on a train that was transferring him to another concentration camp.

Schaecter has been a resident of Miami since 1956. He has been actively involved in the local and national Jewish community for more than 60 years and is a founder of the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach and the March of the Living. He has devoted countless hours to educating the community.
