Palmer Trinity School senior Luca Martinez recently became the first recipient of the Village of Palmetto Bay Mayor’s Youth Environmentalist of the Year award.

The award recognizes a young individual or group that has made significant contributions to the environment. Palmetto Bay Mayor Karyn Cunningham honored Martinez with a tree planting ceremony on National Arbor Day.

“I am so grateful to be the recipient of the first ever Youth Environmentalist Award,” Martinez said. “The experience of being lost for days in nature and enjoying the clear blue waters and cypress trees not only captivates me but is something I want to share with others.”

Martinez is a wildlife photographer and videographer who has been sharing the beauty of a rarely experienced Everglades to more than 60 million viewers around the world through viral cinematic videos on social media (https://www.instagram.com/lucamartinez.fl/).

Martinez is passionate about encouraging his generation to preserve the ecosystem. His work has recently been featured in local news segments, nationally on NBC Nightly News Kids Edition with Lester Holt and as a UNESCO digital exhibit, “River of Grass.”

“Luca’s love for the wetlands is evident and we are so proud of his accomplishments,” said Patrick Roberts, head of school. “He inspires people to protect this unique environment through his wildlife photography and educational presentations where he shares his experiences of capturing its beauty.”
