Palmetto Bay launches its Historical Sites Tour
You can use a cell phone on the walking tour as each location is marked with a sign displaying the name of the site and a QR code that opens a video file describing the location with old photos and narration.

As it gets ready for its 20th anniversary celebration, the Village of Palmetto Bay has launched a Historical Sites Tour for residents and visitors that can be done in-person or on online.

The self-guided walking tour features 14 locations that are an important part of village history. Each location is marked with a sign displaying the name of the site and a QR code that opens a video file describing the location with old photos and narration.

The historic sites tour is based on the village’s “Through The Years” publication that was completed in 2017 by the Heritage Committee to commemorate Palmetto Bay’s 15th anniversary, and the locations and videos are in a booklet, along with an online version of the brochure in English and Spanish.

The tour consists of the following sites:
1. The Town of Peters, which no longer exists but was named after the “Tomato King,” Thomas J. Peters, who moved to the area in 1896. The Town of Peters Historic Marker is at SW 183rd Street and S. Dixie Highway.
2. Morningside Acres, a residential area and house built in 1954 for farm and railroad workers. The marker is at 9835 SW 183 St.
3. Town of Perrine, 1903-1949, named after Dr. Henry Perrine, an early settler who was granted land to introduce new plants from tropical countries. Approximately between SW 184th and 174th streets, 97th and 102nd avenues.
4. Perrine Jail, built in 1946, located at 17425 SW 97 Ave.
5. Perrine Community House, built in 1935, located at 900 Perrine Ave.

Councilmember Marsha Matson and Parks Committee member Sheila Frazier are credited for their research and writing of the Through The Years history booklet, and for developing the idea of a historical tour. The Heritage Task Force and village staff worked on the 15th anniversary of the incorporation of the Village of Palmetto Bay.

The historical tour project was fully funded by the Florida Division of Historical Resources.
