The Village of Palmetto Bay will host two events on Sunday, Oct. 6, that will share the same location, Coral Reef Park. Both are open to the public.
Jennifer Zika, Special Events & Programs coordinator, explained.
“We will be having the Dottie Barton Fall Festival on Oct. 6 from noon to 4 p.m., which will happen in conjunction with the opening of the new Palmetto Bay Farmer’s Market at Coral Reef Park that will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” Zika said. “The festival will include inflatables, music and more. A ribbon cutting for the new rubberized walking paths at Coral Reef Park will also take place at this event.”
The occasion marks the return of the Farmer’s Market at Coral Reef Park, which will have a new look, a new array of vendors offering homegrown produce and local artisans offering a variety of handcrafted items.
Establishment of the Fall Festival was passed by a resolution of the village council on Aug. 22. Village Mayor Karyn Cunningham explained the reason for the special event honoring Dottie Barton, who passed away on June 24 at age 91.
“Dottie Barton played a pivotal role in the incorporation of the Village of Palmetto Bay,” Mayor Cunningham said. “She was an instrumental force in organizing and enhancing the village’s Annual Picnic, fostering community spirit and engagement through this cherished event.
“Coral Reef Park was her biggest passion. She lived just two blocks from the park and was one of the advocates that worked to ensure the park became a treasured recreational space for residents. She loved the fall and so with her granddaughter, Brittany Barton’s blessing, we thought it would be fitting to host a Dottie Barton Day at the park that she loved so much,” the mayor added.
Brittany Barton was pleased about the special day.
“My grandmother, Dottie, was a pillar of this community and cared more about our village than anyone I know,” Brittany Barton said. “She got a genuine thrill out of helping with village picnics and events, and as many who knew and loved her are aware — she was quite ‘crafty’ to say the very least. So, I thought, what better way to honor her memory than with a festival dedicated to her. An event where local artisans like her can share their work, and the community can come together to celebrate our beautiful village and pay homage to one of its original pioneers.”
The rubberized walking trails on the east side of Coral Reef Park were replaced in a project that began July 12. Coral Reef Park is located at 7895 SW 152 St. in Palmetto Bay.
