Long before LeBron James, Paul Warfield was the first big-time athlete to take his talents from Cleveland to Miami and win championships. A football and track star at Ohio State, Warfield originally established himself as an All Pro with the Cleveland Browns. He was traded to Miami in 1970 for a first round draft pick, which turned out to be Purdue quarterback Mike Phipps. The move instantly transformed the Dolphins from a struggling expansion franchise from the AFL into an all-time NFL powerhouse.
Although the Dolphins were considered a running team in the early 1970s, Warfield was regarded as the best receiver of his era. He was named All Pro all five years he played in Miami from 1970 to 1974 and averaged an amazing 20.1 yards per catch for his career. In 1973, Warfield caught only 29 passes, but 11 of them went for touchdowns. In 1974, Warfield along with Miami teammates Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick opted to sign with the Memphis Southmen of the World Football League after a bitter contract dispute with the Dolphins. The Dolphins have yet to win a title since their departure. To learn more about the history of the Orange Bowl, visit us at https://www.facebook.com/
