South Florida summer temperatures have consistently hit extremes of 95 degrees or higher prompting many heat advisories and warnings. An extreme heat advisory goes into effect when the heat index reaches 105 degrees. While extreme heat is a cause for concern for pets and people, pets need extra attention to make sure they do not overheat or suffer from heat exhaustion. As South Florida temperatures creep higher and higher, it’s important to keep yourself and your pets as cool as possible. Here are some tips to beat the heat:
• Keep your pet hydrated by maintaining access to fresh, cool water
• Bring your pet inside or limit your pet’s outdoor activity to cooler times of the day
• If outside, make sure your pet has access to comfortable shade
• Never leave your pet unattended in the car; it is illegal under Florida Law
• Keep paws off hot asphalt and pavement
• Trim hair, but do not shave your pet entirely to avoid sunburn
• Don’t allow pets to overexert themselves – introduce rest breaks into playtime to allow pets to cool down
It’s also important to know the signs of overheating which include:
• Excessive panting and shortness of breath
• Excessive drooling
• Elevated body temperature over 104°F
• Increased pulse and respiratory rate
• Vomiting
• Discolored gums
