Palmer Trinity School junior, Amanda Kaplan, received an honorable mention for her photo submission “Erupting Geyser” in the 2022 AAPT High School Physics Photo Contest in the category of Natural Physics.
The photo contest is an annual international competition for high school students that focuses on the physics behind natural and contrived situations by creating visual and written illustrations of various physical concepts. More than 1,000 students competed for recognition and prizes.
Kaplan’s photo was taken at the Strokkur Geyser in Iceland the moment it was about to erupt and depicts a hydrothermal explosion and the potential energy of a geyser.
“We are thrilled for Amanda and congratulate her on receiving an honorable mention for her submission,” stated Leopoldo Llinas, director of Environmental Stewardship and Science co-chair. “All of our students who participated are to be applauded as well as our science teacher, Ignacio De Echevarria, for engaging and encouraging students during this competition.”
Students Augustine Schuitemaker-March and Hana Hernandez also submitted entries and placed in the top 100 photos.
