For Earth Day Movie Night on Apr. 21, Palmetto Bay residents voting online selected The Lorax as the film they wanted to see for the annual family event.
The movie is based on the children’s book written by Dr. Seuss that was published in 1971, considered a fable concerning the danger of greed causing human destruction of the natural environment. Dr. Seuss himself considered it his personal favorite.
“The Lorax came out of me being angry,” he said during an interview at the time. “The ecology books I’d read were dull. In The Lorax I was out to attack what I think are evil things and let the chips fall where they might.”
The Lorax character of the title is a small furry creature who is fighting to protect his world and fellow creatures, following the destruction of a forest of Truffula trees.
The cautionary tale was turned into an animated movie executive produced by Ken Daurio who is known for Despicable Me (2010), Horton Hears a Who! (2008) and Bubble Boy (2001). It stars the voices of Danny DeVito (as the Lorax), Ed Helms, Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Betty White and many others.
The expanded story is described by the film’s production company in this way: “A 12-year-old boy searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.”
Palmetto Bay’s Movie night will take place on Friday, Apr. 21, from 8 to 10 p.m. at Coral Reef Park, 7895 SW 152 St., in the grassy area. The event also will feature summer camp resource booths and food vendors on site. Village staff recommends that attendees bring blankets and chairs on which to sit. The event is free.
