Richard Barbara, founding partner at Miami law firm Alvarez Barbara LLP, was a special guest speaker at Gulliver Preparatory School’s National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony on Wednesday, Apr. 5, at the school’s Miller Drive Campus. One hundred thirteen Gulliver students were inducted at the event that was attended by 200 parents, friends and school faculty and staff.
Barbara spoke at the induction ceremony about the significance of public service.
“Serving your community is founded on the belief that one individual can truly make a difference in the lives of many,” he said. “And what nobler example of teaching and enabling students in dedicating their time and resources to help the less fortunate than Gulliver.”
NHS is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Founded in 1921, the organization at the school level elects officers who are supervised by a chapter adviser.
“Students are inducted into NHS based on four criteria: scholarship, leadership, community service and character growth,” said Dr. Christopher Calvo, a Gulliver Prep social science faculty member who also serves as NHS faculty advisor. “It is such a pleasure to work with these bright and enthusiastic students who are fully committed to the highest standards of NHS.”
