Vince Lago is running for mayor of the City of Coral Gables in the municipal election scheduled for Tuesday, Apr. 13.
Lago has served two four-year terms on the city commission, beginning in 2013, and currently is serving as vice mayor.
“If elected mayor, I am committed to implementing an agenda that aims to preserve our city’s quality of life, as well as enhance it. That is why I am pledging to focus on five broad categories during my first 100 days: transparency, finance, public service, transportation and the environment.
“As commissioner, I have made transparency one of the cornerstones of my service to the community. Since 2013, I have made myself available to address residents’ concerns weekly in person, over the phone or, more recently, via zoom.
“During my first 100 days, I will embark on a ‘100 Days of Listening’ tour across the city, meeting with businesses, residents, neighborhood associations, the Chamber of Commerce and the Business Improvement District. Basically, all the stakeholders in our city, to better understand their needs and be ready to address them.
“I will also continue — and expand — my office’s open-door policy, committing to meeting with residents every Friday afternoon in my City Hall office or wherever is convenient, as well as expand our popular town hall meetings to get our residents input on issues before they go to the city commission for a vote.
“I will also ask for an independent financial audit of the city immediately after taking office.
Once completed, the audit results will be made available to the public via the city’s website.
“In an effort to improve the way the city operates and delivers services to our residents, I will also institute an open-door policy for all city employees and will encourage them to use it. City staff is the greatest asset our city has, and we need to encourage a work environment that takes into account their input.
“I will also call on the city commission to initiate a new charter review process to ensure we are adapting and evolving to meet our residents and business’s needs. As part of this charter review, I will ask that we adopt a measure calling for regularly scheduled review periods for our charter and other city documents.
“I also pledge that during my first 100 days, I will work with the administration to expand our very successful trolley program to provide service during the weekends. Finally, I will announce a Coral Gables Water Quality Task Force and a Transportation Task Force to work with Miami-Dade County on water and transportation issues, and to identify funding strategies to help our city address both of these pressing issues.”
In his professional career Lago is an executive at a management and design firm which focuses on commercial construction and specializes in the construction of medical and educational facilities.
