Today, Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Chair María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) met with President Irfaan Ali of Guyana to discuss shared economic and security priorities affecting Miami and the wider Caribbean region.
“As the Representative for the city of Miami, the Gateway to the Americas, I am proud to welcome President Ali to the Capital of the United States,” said Rep. Salazar. “Guyana is experiencing explosive economic growth with its embrace of free markets; my hope is that the whole Caribbean will be able to follow their example.”
Hosting the headquarters of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Guyana is a critical strategic partner for the United States. As Chairwoman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Salazar prioritizes economic growth and security around our hemisphere. The economy of Guyana grew by 62% last year and is forecasted to grow by 38% in 2023.
Representative Salazar has introduced numerous pieces of legislation to promote security and prosperity in the Caribbean, including the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative Authorization Act and the U.S.-Caribbean Strategic Engagement Act. Rep. Salazar believes critical legislation like these will not only make Guyana more safe, but will also reduce the influence of bad actors like the Venezuelan and Cuban regimes in the region.
As the Representative for the city of Miami, Congresswoman Salazar represents hundreds of Guyanese Americans in Florida’s 27th congressional district.
