SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER LUCIA BAEZ-GELLER AND THE SCHOOL BOARD OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZE NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS (NAMI) MIAMI-DADE
At the School Board Meeting of May 15, 2024, School Board Member Lucia Baez-Geller proffered agenda item B-8, recognizing National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Miami-Dade.
NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization. They are dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. The Alliance includes more than 700 NAMI State Organizations and Affiliates; of those, NAMI Miami-Dade is a vital community resource in South Florida and a strong, long-standing partner of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
NAMI’s mission is to champion community awareness and education on mental health while providing dedicated support and advocacy for individuals living with mental health challenges and their loved ones. With this mission in mind, NAMI ensures that individuals living with a mental health condition and their families have information, tools, access to services and a strong support network to maximize their recovery outcomes.
The organization offers various Support Groups, led by trained facilitators, that provide participants the opportunity to share their experiences with mental health challenges and receive support from other attendees. NAMI currently offers three support groups: Connections Peer Support Group, Family Support Group, and Parents & Caregivers of Youth. Support Groups are free, confidential, and offered in English and Spanish.
Their Education Programs offer information, resources, and a community of support. They aim to increase understanding of mental health, improve coping skills, and empower participants to advocate for themselves or their loved ones. Some of these programs include: Peer-to-Peer Recovery, Family-to Family, and Ending the Silence.
NAMI Miami-Dade is committed to mental health support for all children, adults, and families across South Florida. The organization reaffirms this commitment to the community by raising awareness, providing education, and advocating on national, state, and county boards and committees. NAMI is a pillar of this community and an essential partner in our school system.
