Service organizations in South Florida hard at work

South Miami, Coral Gables, Miami, Kendall and Coconut Grove Rotarians and Rotarians around the world are committed to volunteer service, “Service Above Self.”

The clubs are looking for those of like mind to join them in their community outreach efforts. Aside from making a positive impact, Rotary is a great way to make new friends and make a difference in the lives of so many.

South Miami Rotarians are gearing up for their 38th annual Art Festival set for Feb. 25-26, in the downtown area of South Miami on Sunset Drive (SW 72nd Street) from US1 to Red Road (SW 57th Avenue.) Look for 129 outstanding artists displaying their creations. You also will find an expanded food court and beer garden, and live jazz onstage. Coral Gables Rotarians have several local and international projects making a positive impact. That club meets every Thursday for lunch at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables and are treated to some great programs featuring authors, business leaders, scientists, doctors, and more. RCCG president Ana Fournaris is fortunate to have past president Felix Pardo return this year to schedule speakers of import. Recent speakers have included such notables as Children’s Trust’s David Lawrence as well as author and writer William Castro and CEO of Jackson Health Systems Carlos Migoya.

Coral Gables Rotary has been joining forces with the Coral Gables Woman’s Club to hold monthly Game Night fundraisers at Bay 13, in Coral Gables. This past event was held Jan. 24 and raised funds to support the efforts of the volunteers at the MIA Airport Military Lounge where RCCG past president Yolanda Woodbridge volunteers every week to serve those men and women and their families who sacrifice so much to preserve our freedom.

Speaking of charity events, Coral Gables Woman’s Club held a “free” Children’s Festival at their clubhouse attended by children from all over South Florida on Feb. 4 and chaired by Saesha Tennyson. Next up, Seasha’s mother, Rita Tennyson, is orchestrating an even bigger event, CGWC’s Centennial Fashion Show & Brunch, as its event chair.

Save the date, Sunday, Feb. 19, noon-3 p.m., at their clubhouse, 1009 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. Look for fashions from Bloom Boutique, designer Natalie Moya and jewelry by Leticia Matheus (Lele Reis).

Reserve now to enjoy a day of fashion, bubbly, brunch bites and fun with proceeds from the affair benefit the CGWC Children’s Dental Clinic. This free clinic provides has provided over the years an average of $200,000 in free dental care to children of the working poor. For tickets, visit Eventbrite or www.gfwccoralgableswomansclub.org.

Feb. 11 will be a busy day in the non-profit world with Coral Gables Community Foundation’s 14th annual Tour of Kitchens to start the day at The Shops at Merrick Park at 9 a.m. where guests grabbing a drink and some breakfast before going on the tour.
Guests will have a great chance to visit Coral Gables’ most exquisite private residence kitchens while enjoying bites and beverages from the city’s top restaurants and merchants.

Later that night, Paws4You will hold its annual gala at the JW Marriott with a Motown Gala that will provide lots of excitement and hilarity with a great dinner, dancing as well as a silent and live auction. It was a guaranteed great time… who doesn’t like Motown? More on both of these events next issue.

A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . Burns' volunteer activities led her to become a columnist for Community Newspapers writing Gloria’s Gab, that focuses on the non-profit activity, and a host of an online show, Gloria's Gab LIVE. Gloria serves the board of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables as Civic and Charity Chair, and is involved in the club's International Committee. She is an active Life Member of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee and is Secretary of the Merrick Festival. She serves on the board of directors of the Coral Gables Woman' Club as Publicity Chair and also coordinates the club's monthly fundraiser for various charities with Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger. In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
