South Florida PBS Highlights Local Connections for August

South Florida PBS (WPBT, WXEL, and Health Channel) is excited to announce our engaging lineup of August premieres, featuring a diverse range of programs from cooking shows to moving documentaries. 

CELEBRATING ICONS:

Explore the life and career of Blake Edwards in American Masters – Blake Edwards: A Love Story in 24 Frames. This documentary showcases the director’s collaboration with Julie Andrews and his influence on Hollywood comedy. This August, tune in for specials by famed documentarian Ken Burns and his collaborators that profile icons such as Muhammad Ali and Hemingway. Gods of Tennis continues this month with episode 3, “Opposite,’’ featuring tennis legends Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. Both Evert and Navratilova reside in South Florida.

CULINARY JOURNEYS:

The Great American Recipe returns for its Season 3 Grand Finale, where talented home cooks from across the country compete with their most memorable recipes. Looking for more foodie content? Enjoy a diverse array of culinary shows like No Passport Needed, A Chef’s Life, Somewhere South, Baking with Julia, Lidia Celebrates America, and more on PBS Passport.

SOCIAL DOCUMENTARIES:

Boston ®evolution dives into the racial complexities of Boston, highlighting the historic 2021 mayoral race. In Firing Line: Counting the Vote, Margaret Hoover explores the varying voting systems across the United States, examining efficient and inclusive states while shedding light on those facing challenges.

In Odysseus Returns, an amateur historian embarks on a journey to prove his controversial discovery of Odysseus’ bones. 

Also, this August, South Florida PBS’ 2023 Suncoast EMMY® Award winning documentary The Florida Keys: 200 Years of Paradise! Take a journey through two centuries of history of the Florida Keys, from the planting of the U.S. flag on Key West in March 1822 to shipwrecks and pirates, natural disasters and restoration and renewal.

SUMMER DRAMA:

Engage with the new seasons of beloved dramas like Miss Scarlet and the Duke and Hotel Portofino. Don’t miss the gripping episodes of Sanditon, Grantchester, COBRA, and Doc Martin. Dive into the mysteries of Magpie Murders and the thrilling cases in Sherlock on Masterpiece – The Abominable Bride.

KIDS & EDUCATION:

KidVision Music Time is back with an all-new episode “Offenbach!” In this episode, Miss Penny meets the composer, Jacques Offenbach. He explains that his music is known for its wit and humor, including his most famous piece, The Can Can. Miss Penny dances to the music then introduces Offenbach to the kids of the Florida Youth Orchestra who are learning how to play The Can Can.

Join Miss Penny at a series of exciting Full STEAM Ahead events! On August 10th we’ll be at Miami Kids Magazine’s Back to School event hosting a fun STEAM activation at the South Florida PBS booth and handing out fun giveaway items. We invite you to join us on September 7th at Young at Art in the Broward Mall for a KidVision Full STEAM Ahead Day! Kids will enjoy various STEAM activity stations, complimentary lunches, and fun prizes.

HEALTH CHANNEL: 

This August, the Health Channel is thrilled to announce the return of Ask the Doc: No Appointment Needed  for its highly anticipated second season. We are excited to feature Dr. Rachna Buxani-Mirpuri, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor at Buxani Counseling Care, who will bring her expertise in mental health to the show. Dr. Buxani-Mirpuri will address a range of mental health topics, providing viewers with valuable insights and advice.

In season one, Ask the Doc: No Appointment Needed covered a variety of important health topics, including heart disease, diabetes management, and cancer prevention. The show’s interactive format allowed viewers to get their pressing health questions answered directly by medical experts, making complex medical information accessible and understandable.

Season two promises to dive deeper into the crucial subject of mental health. Viewers can look forward to episodes focusing on stress management, anxiety, depression, and the impact of mental health on overall well-being.

Also, this August, join us for a special Instagram Live on August 30th at 4 PM with Chef Dulce Jimenez, a renowned Personal Chef and Health Coach. Chef Jimenez will share her expertise on Plant Forward Cooking, offering tips and recipes for incorporating more plant-based meals into your diet. 

Don’t miss Your Health, Your Voice: An Affordable Care Act Town Hall on Wednesday, August 15th at 7 PM on the Health Channel. The Affordable Care Act provides medical insurance plans for individuals and families across the United States. In this Town Hall, experts will offer resources and guidance to help you find the ideal coverage at an affordable price.
