The South Miami Police Department on Thursday, Feb. 23, received reaccreditation by the prestigious Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA). The department was awarded its third reaccreditation after a commission meeting held at the CFA Conference in St. Augustine.
Present to receive the award were South Miami Mayor Javier Fernandez, city manager Genaro “Chip” Iglesias, Chief of Police Rene G. Landa, and his command staff.
The South Miami Police Department is accredited through the CFA, which is an independent accrediting body that is responsible for setting professional standards and evaluating law enforcement agencies in the State of Florida. The CFA’s accreditation program is recognized by the Florida Legislature and is endorsed by the Florida Sheriffs Association and the Florida Police Chiefs Association.
Accreditation provides a number of benefits for law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve, by including increased accountability, improved professionalism, and enhanced public trust. Accredited agencies have demonstrated that they meet or exceed state standards for professionalism, operational efficiency, and effectiveness.
In December 2022, an assessment team from CFA visited South Miami and conducted numerous interviews with department staff as well as community members. They reviewed documents and examined policies and procedures of every aspect of police administration and operations. The South Miami Police Department demonstrated to be 100 percent in compliance with all applicable professional standards.
In Florida there are 387 law enforcement agencies and only 142 of those are accredited.
This means that approximately 37 percent of law enforcement agencies in Florida are accredited by the CFA at that time. The South Miami Police Department is among those prestigious accredited agencies.
“This is the most recent significant accomplishment by the men and women of the South Miami Police Department,” said Chief Rene Landa.
