Samantha Andrade, a seventh grade student at Southwood Middle School, was chosen as the winner of the Village of Palmetto Bay’s annual Earth Day Art Contest, it was announced on Apr. 19. It was the eighth consecutive win for Southwood, a magnet school for the arts.

In recognition of the achievement, the village conducted a ceremonial tree planting at the school followed by an ice cream party for Samantha’s class.

Village Mayor Karyn Cunningham and principal Raul Garcia were joined by Southwood’s art teachers, Samantha’s parents, and Henry Clifford, the Tree Advisory Board chair. Samantha also was presented with a framed copy of her poster design, proclaiming her the winner.

The Earth Day Art Contest, which closed on Friday, Mar. 15, allowed students in middle schools, grades sixth through eighth, an opportunity to express their care and concern for the planet through artwork. A theme is selected each year by the Earth Day Organization and students world-wide create unique designs to fit the theme. The 2024 Earth Day Art Contest theme was “Planet vs. Plastics.”
