As the largest PK-5 Episcopal school in the Miami area, St. Thomas’ beautiful and secure six-acre campus in Coral Gables truly sets it apart from other schools in the area.
On Mar. 17, St. Thomas crossed yet another finish line with a lead donor celebration of the school’s new Middle Field, which allows even more space for students to run, grow, and play.
The Middle Field renovation project was an effort that required work from the entire church and school community. The project was funded through the generosity of major donors, the Parents Association, and the entire school community. Two instrumental cornerstone donors were the Alejandro Dueñas and Al Maloof families, without whom the project would not have been possible.
“The new middle field was a significant investment in the school that our families will be able to benefit from for years to come,” said Sean Zawyer, a member of the facilities committee who led the project. “The response from the St. Thomas community, especially the children, has been amazing. After the year we have had, it’s great to see the kids outside safely playing and having fun with each other.”
The Middle Field includes:
• An elementary school regulation-sized basketball court;
• Six adjustable basketball hoops/nets with tempered glass boards;
• Two removable volleyball nets;
• Two built-in tetherball courts;
• Four 4-Square courts, and
• A track for running, walking, and an array of special activities.
There are plenty of new activities that the Physical Education Department can use in the coming years with the addition of the elementary school regulation-sized basketball court, as well as the 4-Square areas and tetherball. More so, these activities will greatly enhance St. Thomas’ after school enrichment program and summer camp. Another great feature is that the space can easily be converted to allow for extra parking for community-wide events and programs.
“This Middle Field has always been a focal point when entering the campus, and I am proud to be a part of this beautiful transformation to the outside space for interactive play and physical education learning,” said Kurt Bauer Jr., warden and alumni parent.
The project began in earnest once campus closed in summer of 2020 after the onset of COVID-19. Although St. Thomas reopened for in-person learning in September, students were able to fully enjoy the renewed and transformed outdoor space when they returned to campus after winter break.
