The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) FL District 11 conducted its first meeting of Ruth Martinez’s term as district director on June 21 when 12 South Florida women’s clubs gathered to exchange ideas and collaborate.
With Martinez in the lead, you can expect some fun joint events coming soon. In fact, many District 11 clubs that following week joined Ruth in attending the GFWC International Convention at the Chicago Hilton.
Coral Gables Woman’s Club members were especially proud to be at the convention supporting their club sister leads graduate Elizabeth Hicks, who was chosen to represent GFWC Florida at the convention. Among the many other District 11 club members attending were Elizabeth Fisher, Arely Ruiz, Linda Hartwell, Linda Joseph, Metris Batts, Shirley Pardon, Noreen Timoney, Rose Martins, and Clora Adkins.
As for future summer fun, Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) already is planning events for August and into next summer. On Tuesday, Aug. 13, the club’s Gringo (Dingo) Bingo fundraiser at Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen will benefit Voices for Children, Tucker Elementary and Marvin Dunn Academy for Community Education (ACE). The public is invited to support this fun filled night with emcee and entertainer extraordinaire Steven Bradley and party music by celebrity DJ Germain. Admission is $30 and includes one wine, beer or soda, 12 game cards for amazing prizes and one coverall card for the grand prize.
Many thanks to Kings Bowl Doral, sponsors like Lynn Bauer and Hal Wanless, Carlos and Mayra Rossi, Dr. Jose Chaviano, Jerry Kavulich and local businesses including Seasons 52, Threefold Cafe and Clutch Burger and so many more for donating prizes over the years. To RSVP, email gloria@cnews.net.
CGWC even is planning a fundraiser next June with a six-day cruise on a new ship with proceeds benefiting the club’s free children’s dental clinic. This will be open to all GFWC members, friends, families and supporters. Look for more on that in coming issues. July 9 was a great day for this writer returning after a bad fall requiring surgery to host Gloria’s Gab LIVE with an impressive guest, Luis Valenzuela, the founder of the Miami Shoe Museum. Luis is a creative genius. He is a certified teaching artist, visual artist and fashion designer.
Born in Venezuela, Luis comes from four generations of artists and his story of educating students and introducing them to new innovative ways of combining art, design and technology will amaze. In addition, he has a collection of more than 400 shoes for a museum and research project that will be global in its influence.
Look for the museum to launch this August. More info is available at www.miamishoemuseum.us.
Finally, on June 14 was Flag Day and a rainy stormy day forced a potluck dinner with friends to celebrate a day later. You see Susan and John Medina have a beautiful flag and wanted to share a patriotic day with friends who came up with yummy patriotic themed dishes including Lynn Bauer whose strawberry shortcake was the image of a flag. Thanks for sharing the cake and many dinners during my recovery.
Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
