Tropical Audubon Society is marking 50 years of Doc Thomas House stewardship this spring. What began as one man’s home has grown into a gathering place for generations of conservationists, historic preservationists and nature lovers.

In December 1974, Arden Hayes “Doc” Thomas made a visionary gift. He bequeathed his beloved house and wooded 2.2 acres to Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) in a life estate that transacted upon his death one year later. Thomas had entrusted TAS with the protection of a place he cherished. In April 1976, TAS formally established its headquarters in the historic 1932 house.

The house and surrounding grounds have since become a vibrant hub for environmental education, advocacy and community engagement, serving as a testament to grassroots conservation in South Florida — just as Doc intended.

You are invited to step back in time and discover the story behind the Tidewater Red Cypress walls at one of the upcoming house tours. Find out “Who was Doc Thomas?” and

“Who designed his house?”
History tours feature a guided look at the distinctive wood and limestone details of the quaint cottage — inside and out — as well as updates about recently completed and ongoing restoration projects. Information about TAS, the work it does, and its stewardship of the house and surrounding pollinator gardens and demonstration forests also will be covered.

Tours – scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 4, and Saturday, May 2, at 1 and 3 p.m. – are approximately 75-90 minutes, and are facilitated by retired educator, TAS board member and resident historian Dan Jones, who is generously assisted by other volunteers.

There is no fee to attend, though donations are appreciated. Contributions directly support the ongoing preservation and stewardship of the Doc Thomas House and Steinberg Nature Center.

Before or after your tour, you are encouraged to enjoy a self-guided stroll through the Steinberg Nature Center grounds — a peaceful reminder of why this place, and its mission, continue to matter.
