For 15-year-old Connor Porry, pickleball has become a campaign.
The teenager has a petition to change the rules in Pinecrest to make the courts less expensive and more accessible, so he and his friends and family can play without spending a fortune.
Right now, the Village of Pinecrest charges $17.12 with tax per hour from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Mondays to Sundays for a pickleball court at Coral Pinecrest Park. That reservation fee jumps to $21.40 with tax from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. per hour. Reservations are required.
At Suniland Park, the pickleball courts are free Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, but nets come down at noon. During the week, all the kids are in school, so there is no chance to play after school.
Currently, Connor has 428 signatures. He is also talking with Miami-Dade County Commissioners to get their support.
