And guess what? Nothing is going to change….Absolutely nothing.

“…..Since I’ve been President, this is the fourth time we have come together to comfort a grieving community torn apart by a mass shooting. The fourth time we’ve hugged survivors. The fourth time we’ve consoled the families of victims. And in between, there have been an endless series of deadly shootings across the country, almost daily reports of victims, many of them children, in small towns and big cities all across America — victims whose — much of the time, their only fault was being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
We can’t tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change. We will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true. No single law — no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world, or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society.
But that can’t be an excuse for inaction. Surely, we can do better than this. If there is even one step we can take to save another child, or another parent, or another town, from the grief that has visited Tucson, and Aurora, and Oak Creek, and Newtown, and communities from Columbine to Blacksburg before that — then surely we have an obligation to try….”
-President Barack Obama 16 December 2012 at the Sandy Hook Prayer Vigil.
SURELY WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO TRY!
Yes, we have an obligation to try, and many try….But it seems to be for naught. Another school campus/college campus shooting today at Florida State University. And NO! I do not want to hear about mental health issues. ENOUGH I don’t want to hear that what the families need now are prayers…ENOUGH!
In Florida, in 2023, the legislation has pushed for and gotten permitless carry. They now look to drop the age of long-rifle possession from 21 to 18. There is also talk to allow for carrying firearms on college campuses. Yeah, that is the world we are in. The question is where does it end? Or will it ever?
Since 1999, 440 people have been killed and 1,243 injured in shooting events at K-12 schools. This count includes all types of shooting incidents that occurred at schools or school events, including accidental discharges. (A Timeline of School Shootings Since Columbine, Security.Org 4 April 2025). Additionally, There were 332 shooting incidents at K-12 schools in 2024, resulting in 267 injuries and fatalities. This does not include colleges/universities.
What is missing in such stats are the incidents where the perpetrator was halted before being able to carry out the carnage. The what-ifs……
This is going to happen again, within the next few months. The statistics don’t lie….So here we are again…Another school/campus shooting. Don’t put away your anger and tears just yet. More is coming.
I look to the wisdom of President Obama in a speech he made on January 5, 2016 after the Senate failed to pass legislation that would have brought forth some gun reform.
“Each time this comes up, we are fed the excuse that common-sense reforms like background checks might not have stopped the last massacre, or the one before that, or the one before that, so why bother trying. I reject that thinking. We know we can’t stop every act of violence, every act of evil in the world. But maybe we could try to stop one act of evil, one act of violence.”
The gun lobby is just too strong in Washington, D.C. It is almost like sweeping the ocean back with a broom. How sad!
I am a realist. Absolutely nothing will change. And nothing will change the next time this happens or the time(s) after that. If Sandy Hook did not move the needle, nothing ever will.
Sad, isn’t it?
