Remembering the Honorable Shirley Gibson

Mayor Gibson will forever be an icon. She was instrumental in incorporation of the City of Miami Gardens, and she and the first Council built the solid foundation on which we stand. I will forever respect and honor her.

Community Engagement and Programs

It feels like we just got here, and the year is already ending. It’s been a really good year. We’ve accomplished a lot and implemented a few things that will positively impact our City for generations to come.

Under the City-University Partnership, three major institutions that surround our community are offering college courses to Miami Gardens residents at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex. The City has also been able to get some significant development going and projects completed. Parks are being opened and funded so that residents can enjoy and participate in various programming.

Over the past year, we’ve been very successful with our Let’s Walk For Health (Quarterly Community Walks) that spread awareness about diseases affecting predominantly African-American communities. We also partner with local health and wellness clinics throughout the City to host conversations around these topics.

Table Talk Tuesdays continue to do well. These are monthly meetings where residents and I have casual conversations about what we want to see in our City and discuss any issues that may arise within their neighborhoods.

Holiday Initiatives

On November 20, I did a turkey giveaway at Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex, and a Christmas tree giveaway followed soon after. We’ll start the New Year strong with a spring enrollment for the City-University Partnership, and we’ll invite residents, once again, to participate in the City’s annual Fitness Challenge.

My message to our residents is to spend this holiday season with your loved ones. Time moves extremely fast, and we want to enjoy the moments, so take the time to connect with family and friends that you haven’t connected with throughout the year.

I wish everyone a Happy Holiday and a prosperous New Year.
