On Saturday, February 10, all three loops of the Metromover system will be temporarily closed due to a helicopter flyover to the Miami Tower roof, related to building improvements. During this time, all Metromover stations will remain closed for the safety of the Metromover system and its riders. A free bus shuttle service between stations will be available until the stations open. Metromover riders will be notified via service alertssocial media, and the GO Miami-Dade Transit app once the stations open for service.

At this time, this is the only temporary closure of the Metromover system and there is no long-term Inner Loop closure planned.

Miami-Dade County is actively working on upgrading the Metromover, a free elevated people mover system that operates seven days a week in downtown Miami, Omni, and Brickell areas that has been in service for over 30 years. As part of the Metromover Upgrade Project, a potential future closure of the Inner Loop is being reviewed to significantly improve service and extend the system’s lifespan. DTPW will communicate key dates to riders with ample time. There is no planned long-term closure at this time.

DTPW recognizes the need for an aggressive approach to replacing and repairing these 30-year-old subsystems to ensure reliability and accessibility. As such, the department started construction work to overhaul the Metromover system in July 2022. The multi-year project includes enhancements to the operating system and guideway electrical components. It also includes a complete overhaul of the central control center and an upgrade of the track switches.

Once this $150 million upgrade is completed, the Metromover system enhancements will include:

  • Improved system reliability, which will help reduce service disruptions.
  • Increased vehicle frequency, which will reduce wait times for riders.
  • Extended lifespan of the system to another 30 years by rehabilitating the track.

Funding for the Metromover Upgrade Project is being provided by the People’s Transportation Plan (PTP) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
