At the School Board Meeting of November 15, 2023, School Board Member Danny Espino proffered agenda item H-9, authorizing the Superintendent of Schools to explore the feasibility of developing a mapping and location identifying plan for all Miami-Dade County Public Schools, which creates a uniform methodology for school site orientation, to be used for signage and camera labeling.
Furthermore, the item requests that, if feasible, provide current mapping data to Miami-Dade Police Department’s Command Center, Miami-Dade Police Department’s Real-Time Crime Center, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, and other local jurisdictional police/fire departments (Mapping data should contain site-specific labeling, including room, hallway areas, critical locations, automated defibrillators, trauma kits, re-unification areas, and camera locations); and if determined feasible, engage in discussions and negotiations with MDPD to grant access to District school site cameras to Miami-Dade Police Department’s Command Center and Miami-Dade Police Department’s Real-Time Crime Center, pursuant to the establishment and codification of an MOU, while not disclosing publicly any safety-sensitive information.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its schools. This item endeavors to work with Miami-Dade partners to deter, identify, and solve crimes and increase the overall public safety in our neighborhoods and throughout the county to create a safer landscape amongst various stakeholders. By unifying initiatives and local partnerships, M-DCPS has the opportunity to significantly enhance the overall safety and security of all District schools. This unified approach would streamline communication, share critical information efficiently, and allow for real-time monitoring and response, ensuring that every facet is addressed in a synchronized manner. It also enables better resource allocation, optimizing budgets for maximum effectiveness.
“As School Board, we are entrusted with the sacred duty of keeping students safe in our schools. Students’ safety and security is the number one priority for this Board and our entire community because, without safety, there is no learning,” said Board Member Espino. “This item seeks to enhance our current partnerships with local stakeholders, allowing us to work in a more unified and seamless way.”
Pursuant to agenda item H-9, a report on the feasibility of this proposed plan will be provided to the Board during the Fiscal Accountability and Government Relations Committee by December 13, 2023.
