At the School Board Meeting of August 16, 2023, School Board Vice Chair Danny Espino proffered agenda item H-12, authorizing the Superintendent of Schools, through the District’s review process of the Code of Student Conduct, which incorporates contributions from student, parents, teachers, and school administrators, consider and is done in consultation with the General Counsel, consider amendments thereto that establish an explicit prohibition on filming acts of violence on school premises, school buses, athletic activities, and related activities that fall under district purview and distributing those videos digitally or through posting them online, when such acts cause harm to students or disrupt the educational environment, if deemed appropriate and lawful.
The item further requests that consistent with any changes to the Code of Student Conduct, establish workshops and educational sessions on responsible digital citizenship and on any amendments to the Code of Student Conduct contemplated by this item. Also, explore the feasibility of enhancing the confidential reporting mechanisms for students and staff to foster a culture of accountability and trust and of developing a campaign to educate parents and guardians about responsible cell phone use and how to better monitor their children’s online activities to promote a safer digital environment.
“It is critical that our schools remain safe learning environments for all students. To that end, it is important that the District’s Code of Student Conduct, the framework that regulates student behavior, be reviewed and enhanced as needed and in accordance with the times. This item aims to ensure that inappropriate behavior is discouraged and to reinforce the importance of responsible digital citizenship,” said Vice Chair Espino.
Pursuant to agenda item H-12, a report prior to the review of the Code of Student Conduct will be submitted to the Board no later than the October 4, 2023, at the Personnel, Student, School, and Community Support Committee.
