The Miami Foundation’s $5 million+ Community Grants program is accepting applications for its 2023 funding cycle. For the first time ever, the grant program offers multi-year general operating grants and a higher funding cap to more deeply invest in nonprofits that are creating a stronger, more equitable Miami. In addition, the entire Sustainable Environment grant category will be dedicated in honor of Harvey Ruvin, for his lifetime of service to our community.

For more than 50 years, the Foundation has been building endowment funds alongside generous partners like Miami-Dade County and The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation to fuel charitable giving each year that addresses Miami’s most pressing needs and greatest opportunities.

Community Grant applicants will find some significant changes to this year’s application process. For the first time ever, grantees will be awarded a two-year unrestricted, general operating grant to help build nonprofit missions and support sustainability. The shift enables funded organizations to use grant dollars to advance their mission, including operating costs such as paying for overhead, growing programs, or investing in capacity. As an added bonus, extending the funding cycle to two years gives nonprofit executives time to focus on impact instead of on annual grant writing.

“This annual community grants program is an all-call for changemakers to share their bold ideas, and an opportunity for the philanthropic community to listen deeply and foster supportive partnerships with those doing the work on the ground,” said Rebecca Fishman Lipsey, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. “We are proud to honor Harvey Ruvin’s lifetime of service this year in partnership with Miami-Dade County as part of this special annual program.”

The six grant categories include: Access to Health and Wellness, Economic Stability, Inclusion of People with Diverse Abilities, Inspiring Arts and Culture, Thriving Youth and Families, and Sustainable Environment. This last category, created to develop a healthier, more resilient community through education and action, is made possible by support from Miami-Dade County who is partnering with the Foundation to manage their environmental education grant program.  This move increased the funding available to support environmental education to more than $1.3 million and aligned the funding with the County’s Resilient 305 priorities. The 2023 Sustainable Environment category will be dedicated in memory of Harvey Ruvin, a long-time County employee with a passion for environmental education and sustainability.

“Harvey was a fierce defender of Miami-Dade’s environment and global leader on climate change. He was one of the earliest and most vocal champions of the protection of Biscayne Bay and played a central role in setting up the county’s recycling program and the endangered land preservation program,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “I can think of no greater honor that dedicating the Sustainable Environment category to his memory.”
