Sunday evening, the Orlando Magic (32-43) extended their win streak to three games after defeating the (40-35) Brooklyn Nets with a final score of 119-106 . The Nets had come into Orlando after a victory against the Miami Heat the night before, while the Magic were riding high off a win against the New York Knicks just a few nights prior.
While the Magic were without Jonathan Isaac due to a torn left adductor, the Nets were missing Ben Simmons due to knee and back injuries, as well as Seth Curry for personal reasons. However, despite the absence of these key players, both teams were determined to secure a win.
The Magic dominated from the start, taking the lead early and never relinquishing it. They had a particularly impressive second quarter, scoring 36 points and effectively putting the game in cruise control. The team’s defense was also exceptional, holding the Nets to just 40% shooting from the field and a measly 23% from beyond the arc.
What’s more, the Magic had eight players scoring in double digits, tying the franchise record for the 13th time. This impressive performance was led by Cole Anthony with 21 points, 6 rebounds, followed by Fran Wagner with a near triple double: 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists. Other notable contributors include, Wendell Carter Jr. with 18 points and 6 rebounds, Jalen Suggs with 16 points, Moritz Wagner with 12 points, and the frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year, Paolo Banchero with 11 points and 9 rebounds.
Despite the loss, the Nets had a standout performance from Mikal Bridges, who continues to excel in his new role as the team’s franchise cornerstone. Bridges had an impressive 44 points, making him the top scorer of the game. Other key contributors for the Nets include, Cam Thomas with 18 points, and Cameron Johnson with 10 points.
What’s Next?
This game was a must win game for both teams, with the Nets hoping to avoid the play-in tournament as they fight for the sixth seed with the Miami Heat. Meanwhile, the Magic (32-43) are only four games behind the final play-in spot and will face off against the (47-27) Memphis Grizzlies, Tuesday night. The Grizzlies have recently welcomed back Ja Morant to their lineup and on the season are averaging 116.8 points per game while holding their opponents to just 112.4 points per game, ranking them 7th across the league defensively.
