The Orlando Magic falter in Overtime against the Sacramento Kings

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Saturday evening, the Orlando Magic were matched up with another western conference foe, the Sacramento Kings. There was a lot of room for optimism with this matchup considering the team was coming off of a shocking victory against the reigning world champs (Golden State Warriors) just the other night.

The Orlando Magic dominated the first half against the Sacramento Kings, as they amounted to an 18 point lead to cap it off. Lob after lob, dunk after dunk, Bol Bol and Wendell Carter Jr. were finding it all too easily to score viciously at the rim. The team’s promising youth with players such as Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner who have rejuvenated this fanbase with a presence felt throughout the arena. The Magic’s slashing ability left the arena awestruck by these uber athletic plays that happened to result from such timely passing.

Drama in the third

There’s a common saying throughout the sport in which “basketball is a game of runs” and in this case it most certainly was. Soon after Banchero opened the second half with the first two points, the Kings then responded with a run of their own. Players such as Fox and Sabonis led their respective calvary, outscoring their opponent 36-12 by the end of the third. The lead that the hometown team had amounted to was no longer, as total momentum had shifted over to the opposition heading into the 4th.

Tragic Fourth

The fourth quarter opened up in a similar fashion, as the Kings jumped out to a 10 point lead (their largest of the night). However, when all hope seemed to be lost, Banchero and Bol made sure to remind the fans that the game wasn’t over. The spark that those players provided was enough to take back their lead as well as providing them with what the crowd in the arena had thought to be a cushion for the final minute of the ball game. With yet another haymaker, Fox was able to tie it all up and send it to overtime.

Requiem for a Loss

During the second half, more specifically in the fourth quarter it was hard to not notice the fact that the arena had played the score from Requiem for a Dream. The score was very fitting for the night as this game had many Magic fans experiencing a wide range of emotions but ultimately, it was one of sorrow. During the overtime period, the visiting team had jumped out to yet another lead. Suggs and Okeke were able to knot the score back up before “it” happened. The moment in which any athlete lives for, “the game winner”. De’Aaron Fox had done it, he had stunned the entire arena with his three point attempt from the logo as the clock winded down to zero. Despite all heroic efforts from Banchero and Wagner the Magic found themselves with another loss.

What’s Next?

The Orlando Magic will have to face another rebuilding franchise. The Houston Rockets who find themselves at the bottom of the league will come into town Monday evening. The Rockets are currently 2-9 and are averaging 108 points per game while  defensively they allow for 115.7 points per game. Considering the circumstances the odds are in favor for the Magic to prevail.
