At the School Board Meeting of March 19, 2025, School Board Member Luisa Santos proffered agenda item H-14, reaffirming the School Board’s commitment to addressing the digital divide and implementing the “Equitable Digital Experience Framework” with a focus on digital literacy by requesting the Superintendent to:
- Review the current level of keyboarding proficiency among students at various grade levels and identify disparities in access to formal keyboarding instruction;
- Identify the instructional tools, digital platforms, staffing, and professional development needed to implement a keyboarding curriculum district-wide successfully;
- Explore partnerships to provide keyboarding instruction and/or tools at a low cost and/or no cost to all students;
- Provide information on various implementation models, including integration within existing coursework, stand-alone programs, or extracurricular offerings; and
- Include the implementation of formal keyboarding instruction as a component of digital literacy education in the Board’s Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) 2025 Legislative Program;
M-DCPS, a national leader in education, is committed to enhancing teaching and learning through technology. Keyboarding proficiency is a key digital literacy skill essential for academic success, career readiness, and workforce participation. Starting in kindergarten, students use digital tools daily, and digital literacy becomes even more important as they progress, with assessments like i-Ready and FAST requiring typed responses.
Research shows that prior computer exposure enhances writing, including text length and editing skills. Modern literacy demands typing fluency, as poor keyboarding increases cognitive load and distracts from content. With technology integral to tests, research, and communication, proficient typing is key to academic and career success. M-DCPS is advancing digital literacy through initiatives like the Equitable Digital Experience Framework and AI tools, ensuring all students develop essential skills for future success.
“In today’s world, typing isn’t just a skill, it’s a necessity. It is critical to academic success and career readiness in an increasingly digital world. By equipping students with the tools to type efficiently, we are ensuring they are not only prepared for the classroom, but the demands of the modern workforce. ” said School Board Luisa Member Santos.
Pursuant to agenda item H-14, a report will be provided to the School Board on the feasibility of implementing keyboarding instruction no later than May 7, 2025, at the Academics, Innovation, Evaluation & Technology Committee, including programs in existence, recommendations for phased implementation, and potential pilot programs.
