The Underline’s Play Forest groundbreaking celebration took place on Saturday, June 7, at City of South Miami City Hall. This family-focused event marked the start of construction on

The Play Forest, the second designated play area in The Underline, generously sponsored by Nikki Spoelstra.

Once completed, this nature-inspired play space, located adjacent to South Miami City Hall, will provide an inclusive, imaginative environment where children and families can explore and connect through play.

The celebration welcomed families for a morning of music, kid-friendly activities, and food from local vendors. The event also drew strong civic support, with elected officials in attendance including Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Miami-Dade County District 7 Commissioner Raquel Regalado, South Miami Mayor Javier E. Fernandez, and City of South Miami Commissioners Danny Rodriguez and Lisa Bonich. Their presence underscored the county’s ongoing commitment to creating inclusive, nature-based public spaces that enhance quality of life for residents of all ages in the heart of South Miami.

“We have to do this with friends and community, and having Nikki Spoelstra to sponsor this incredible installation is very very heartwarming,” Mayor Levine Cava said.

“I started to think about my life in this chapter and what I wanted to do and the things that are important to me, and some of those things are family, community, culture, education, service, transportation, and getting people to where they want to go. The Underline project checked a lot of boxes for me, and getting to see all my family and friends come out to support this means the world to me,” Spoelstra said.

“Today we’re not only celebrating the groundbreaking, but really the power of imagination and persistence, so I want to thank everyone involved for this gift.” Mayor Fernandez said.

“It’s so much more than a linear park. It’s so much more than access to transit. It really is an opportunity to build community, grow community, and reclaim space,” Commissioner Regalado said. “It’s about urban redevelopment, about having a vision and looking at all these projects and thinking, how can we do more for the next generation, not less.”
