Tim Foley: A Man of Many Talents

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Former Miami Dolphins defensive back Tim Foley was one of unsung heroes of the team’s No Name Defense of the 1970s.

A native of Wilmette, Illinois in the Chicago area, Foley was a highly regarded high school quarterback. He enrolled at Purdue University as a freshman quarterback in 1966. That same year, the Boilermakers had a senior All American quarterback named Bob Griese. Foley was eventually moved to defense and earned All American honors in as a senior in 1969.

Drafted in the 3rd round in 1970 by the Dolphins as part of Don Shula’s first draft class. Foley went on to become one of the most accomplished cornerbacks in franchise history. He played all 11 seasons of his NFL career (1970-1980) in Miami, intercepting 22 passes. Foley played on 3 AFC championship teams, 2 Super Bowl championship teams and a member of the only undefeated team in NFL history. In 1978, he became the first Dolphin cornerback selected to the Pro Bowl. He eventually finished his career playing safety.

Foley made more money after football than he did during his playing career. He went on to a successful business career as an Amway representative and spent 15 years as a college football color commentator for TBS. A talented singer, he even recorded an album in 1979 titled Now That I’ve Found You.
