The Traditional Building Conference Series travels to the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Dec. 1 and 2.
The program focuses on 21st Century challenges such as climate change response, affordable housing, carbon reduction, and the role of equity in design. The presenters will offer educational training emphasizing solutions that historic and new traditional buildings provide. The sessions offer an in-depth application of appropriate materials and methods for this important sector within the construction industry.
The conference is designed for architects, engineers, contractors, artisans, tradespeople, developers, and anyone with an interest in traditional materials and methods. The conference offers 8.5 AIA Health/Safety/Welfare learning units for architects in need of credit. Tours will offer some additional learning units as well.
Leading local presenters are Coral Gables own Andres Duany, FAIA, and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, FAIA. Visiting presenters include Jill Gotthelf, AIA; Aaron Ruby, AIA; Manual Mergal, AIA; Marieanne Khoury-Vogt, AIA; Lori Garret, FAIA; Randy Holmes, FAIA; Prof. Christopher J. Tours will be offered of commercial and residential neighborhoods in Coral Gables by the Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables (HPACG) and will be led by local preservation leaders, Albert Menendez and Dr. Karelia Martinez Carbonell. The Dade Heritage Trust will conduct a tour of the Biltmore Hotel.
Session topics include: Affordable by Design: Codes, Classicists, and Class; Culture, Climate and Classicism: A Tradition of Beauty and Durability in Florida, and much more.
