Tropical Audubon Society will stage its annual Bird Day two weeks earlier this year on Saturday, Feb. 7, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

The free community event is an engaging, educational afternoon full of enriching outdoor experiences on the non-profit’s wooded Steinberg Nature Center grounds, 5530 Sunset Dr. Now in its 12th year, the nature festival is designed for families with young children, students of every age, Scouts, birders and naturalists.

The event features interactive activities (owl pellet dissection, bird-themed games) and prizes, and the opportunity to “meet” wildlife rehabilitated by Pelican Harbor Seabird Station and Wildlife Rescue of Dade County. Attendees can also hone their binocular skills, try their hand at Nature Journaling, and sing like our feathered friends. Youth who complete eight “passport activity stations” receive a limited-edition Bird Day tee-shirt, while supplies last.

Chaired by TAS education director Daniel “DJ” Mlodozeniec, Bird Day celebrates the annual northbound flight of nearly 350 species of migratory birds stopping in South Florida on their return to North America from the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Mexico.

To help scientists track our winter avian visitors, attendees also can learn how to participate in the Feb. 13-16 “Great Backyard Bird Count,” a global Community Science initiative

Activity schedule:
11 a.m.-3 p.m. – Enjoy Activity Stations, Wildlife Encounters and Conservation Partner Tables.

11:30 a.m. – Participate in a Great Backyard Bird Count Seminar and Bird Walk with TAS Board member and field trip coordinator Brian Rapoza. Birdwatchers of every level can learn the ropes and contribute to the national tally.

12:30 p.m. – View the historic Doc Thomas House with TAS historian Dan Jones.

1 p.m. – (tentative) Watch a rehabilitated raptor be released by Wildlife Rescue of Dade County. Hear remarks by Miami-Dade County District 7 Commissioner Raquel Regalado.

1:15 p.m. – Attend a presentation of Dodo with book author Cristina Keller, owner of The Art Seed studio.

Bonus: Explore the trails that thread Tropical Hardwood Hammock and Pine Rocklands demonstration forests.
