U.S. Rep. presents check for village’s Veterans Park

The Village of Palmetto Bay’s Veterans Park, which will be Palmetto Bay’s sixth park, moved a step closer to reality in June.

On June 17, the village acquired the beneficial title to the land where the park will be situated from South Motors. The park will be located north of SW 160th Street and 164th Street, east of S. Dixie Highway and west of 92nd Avenue.

Then on June 18, U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar presented Village Mayor Karyn Cunningham with an appropriation check for $200,000 to support construction of Phase 1 of the park.

“As our residents know, Palmetto Bay’s parks are our pride and joy,” Mayor Cunningham said. “Veterans Park will further enhance the green spaces in the ‘Village of Parks’ and will also stand as a monument to the brave men and women who dedicate their lives to preserving our freedoms both here in the village and across the nation. We’re excited about the park and grateful for everyone who has supported the project, most recently Congresswoman Salazar.”

The purpose of the park is to promote patriotism and to honor United States Veterans and first responders.

“The significance of this is not lost on me, nor is it lost on our community’s veterans and teachers,” said Mayor Cunningham in an earlier statement. “This park has special significance to me. Both my father and stepfather served in the Marines and Navy, respectively, and there are over 700 veterans living in the Village. This will be a place of reflection and education, and in my opinion, inspire generations for years to come.”
