U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Fort Lauderdale Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen, other local dignitaries and notables, and military Veterans joined Kathleen Cannon, President/CEO of United Way of Broward County and MISSION UNITED staff for a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, November 1 to celebrate the grand opening of United Way of Broward County’s MISSION UNITED’s second location in Fort Lauderdale at 320 SE 9th Street). The opening of the new building also kicked off the year-long celebration to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of MISSION UNITED.

MISSION UNITED is a community-based initiative convening and aligning public and private resources in Broward County to support U.S. military service members, Veterans, and their families by helping them acclimate to civilian life. Key focus areas include employment services, education, health, legal assistance, financial stability, and housing support.

The new building will help MISSION UNITED provide these resources to more military Veterans in Broward County, supplementing the work of its main headquarters, the Jean and David Colker Center, located at 1300 S. Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

“We’re beyond excited to be able to expand our services and serve more Veterans with the opening of this brand-new building,” said Kathleen Cannon, President/CEO of United Way of Broward County. “Having already served over 20,000 veterans, the opening of a second location will allow us to continue to provide services to Veterans and their families that include everything from housing support to legal assistance.”

The event featured a Welcome Address by Kathleen Cannon, an Invocation by Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen and speeches by Congresswoman Schultz, MISSION UNITED Board Member Stephen Moss, and John Bowen, a local military Veteran. Congresswoman Schultz recognized the organization for its dedication to Veterans while also sharing information about the new PACT Act law that expands VA health care benefits to Veterans. Stephen Moss shared personal stories about his experiences helping Veterans find care, one of which included his daughter, while Veteran John Bowen spoke directly about MISSION UNITED’s efforts to find him housing, and he also generously volunteered to be on the MISSION UNITED advisory council.
