Hello, my fellow Miramar residents: My name is Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis and it a pleasure to represent you here in this great City! Since returning to public office in March of this year I have endeavored to listen to your concerns and respond to them timely all while fulfilling many of my campaign promises.
Speaking of campaign promises, March 27, 2019, I proposed and passed legislation to have a body worn camera program for the Miramar Police Department. This program will benefit both the officers and the public by ensuring transparency and accountability for all. I am very proud of this accomplishment as we now join many other cities across this great country in making our residents, visitors as well as our officers safer!
As a City working with my colleagues on the Commission, we have made strides in almost every area of governance but there is so much more that needs to be done especially in the area of affordable housing. To this end we have partnered with Habitat for Humanity as well as various developers throughout the City to make a dent into the affordable housing crisis.
In an effort to continue to keep taxes and fees low, we have been actively seeking out new revenue streams and have embarked on and approved billboards to be placed in various locations in the City close to highways that will bring in significant revenues to the City, this along with bus bench advertising as well as bus advertising is a step in the right direction.
Since coming into office earlier this year office, I championed a resolution to make sure we had a dedicated funding source for Art in Public places throughout the entire city of Miramar. The fund will be set up with contributions from developers to ensure that public art is created and made accessible to all.
I am currently working with staff to create a tree trimming & pruning grant program for residents throughout the city. The criteria for the program and how to apply will be forthcoming.
My colleagues and I recently agreed to a resolution for the naming of the netball courts at the Ansin Sports Complex after a tireless advocate for netball, Grace Bailey who passed on recently. I feel that for those who give so much to the City, it is the least we can do to recognize their effort in life but also create a lasting legacy.
In May of last year, the City welcomed the Reggae Girlz on their way to the World Cup in France being the first Caribbean Nation to qualify for the Women’s World Cup. During that time, I hosted a Sports Summit and the City signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Jamaica Football Federation as well as other sporting organizations in Jamaica. We hope to attract world class sporting activities to our City through these and other partnerships.
As we head into the new budget year, we are pleased to announce we have not raised our millage rate or the fire service fee. Instead we have opted to work within our means all while still looking for new sources of revenue.
Some of the projects that I have requested and have been approved for this new budget year include park improvements to Monarch Lakes Park as well as Harbor Lakes Park & Shirley Branca Park. Additionally, we will bring on stream a skate park and a dog park. I’ve also requested the resurfacing of parts of Monarch Lakes Blvd. among other capital improvements.
As we kick off the new year, I would like to wish you and your family a great year ahead. Speaking of the New Year, we will celebrate Black History Month in February with an exciting twist, as February is also Reggae Month. Biography
Alexandra P. Davis was born in England and raised in Jamaica, where she attended Mico Practicing All Age School, Wolmer’s Girls’ High School and the University of the West Indies (UWI) obtaining her BSc. Degree in zoology and chemistry.
She has spent most of her life in public service having worked for the Ministry of Agriculture in Kingston, Jamaica, The Capital Taxes office in London, England and Miami- Dade County government in Florida.
Alexandra P. Davis became Commissioner of The City of Miramar in 2010 and was re-elected in March of 2019 where she was appointed Vice Mayor by her colleagues. She has worked on numerous initiatives whilst in office such as:
1. Creating a Youth Apprenticeship program,
2. Proposing the building of a Community Band-Shell at Shirley Branca Park
3. Championing the building of the Police Substation in the eastern/historic section of Miramar
4. Ensuring that all schools have school resource officers to include public charter schools
5. Legislating that seniors who qualify no longer pay City taxes
6. Championing a Police Body Worn Camera program for the Miramar PD
7. Proposing a skate park and dog park for residents to enjoy.
