Village has ribbon cutting for traffic circle sculpture
Members of the Village Council and Parks and Recreation staff participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Franjo Road Traffic Circle.

The formal ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Art in Public Places sculpture located at the center of the Franjo Road Traffic Circle project took place on Dec. 18 with Mayor Karyn Cunningham and members of the Village Council as well as staff from the Parks and Recreation Department and event planners in attendance.

The public art piece by artist Michael Szabo stands more than 16 feet tall and is an “abstract reference to the ongoing dialogue between Palmetto Bay, its residents, and the community” that all create together.

The artwork was fully funded through the Art in Public Places Fund. All construction projects in Palmetto Bay more than $250,000 are required to contribute to this fund, which can only be used for public art. It enables the village to increase its display of public art without the expenditure of village-budgeted funds.

Szabo was selected through a public call-to-artist request and selected by the Art in Public Places advisory board members Dana Pezoldt, Gary Traczyk, Jacqueline Prussing, Jamie Wasser, Donna Underwood, Mary Elizabeth Maggio and Liz Amore. Staff members Andrea Candelaria, who was the Resilience coordinator, and Mark Alvarez, interim Community and Economic Development director, also were involved.

Szabo was pleased to be chosen and that his art will be part of the village.

“I was thrilled to learn that my proposal was selected for the Franjo Road Traffic Circle,” Szabo said at the time of selection. “Through my research in developing the concept I learned about the rich history of the area and the unique, intimate and tight-knit community the residents of Palmetto Bay have built. I’m honored and excited for my work to be incorporated into the Palmetto Bay experience.”
