During the start of the Palmetto Bay Village Council meeting of Oct. 17, the village was presented with a check in the amount of $50,000 from the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP).

Jessica Cabral, park services specialist of the Barnacle Historic State Park representing the FRDAP, made the presentation to Mayor Eugene Flinn, Vice Mayor John DuBois and Councilmembers Karyn Cunningham, Tim Schaffer and Larissa Seigal Lara.

“The Department of Environmental Protection is proud to administer the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program,” Cabral said. “It’s a competitive grant program that funds the acquisition or development of lands for outdoor recreational use and this year we’re very proud that we’re able to invest more than $7 million in 137 recreational projects in south Florida.

“Today I have the honor of presenting to you and your community a Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program check for $50,000 for the Perrine Wayside Park Improvements Project,” she added.

The funds will pay for new picnic facilities, fencing and landscaping, a walking trail and dog park. Cabral congratulated the council on receiving the grant.

Mayor Flinn thanked her and commented on the effort that went into the project.

“I do want to add that this was the one appropriation not vetoed by the governor this year, but I think that was in large part to staff and Olga Cadaval’s dogged determination that we should get this money for the dog park,” Flinn said.
