The Village of Palmetto Bay conducted a student photography contest, which ran from Sept. 11 to Oct. 15. “We want to see the Village of Parks through your lens” was the challenge and the contest theme was “Environment.”

The top finishers were announced on Nov. 14 and they will be recognized during the Mayor’s State of the Village Address at Thalatta Estate Park on Dec. 6.

The prizes were gift certificates to Pittman Photo Supplies, a long-established photographic supply company located in Palmetto Bay. First place prize was $500; second place earned $250, third place received $100.

The three top entries were from students at Westminster Christian School and all were in the ninth grade. The top finishers were C. J. Pazmino (First Place), Jeremiah Laguerre (Second Place), and Daniel Valente (Third Place).

Councilmember Steve Cody was one of the judges, selected because he is the Council Liaison to the Art in Public Places Committee. He was impressed with the level of photographic skill displayed and with the number of entries received.

“There were 150 and a lot of very good stuff, so it was tough,” Councilmember Cody said.

“When I first got on the council, I think we only had 30 submissions total. I’m going to suggest that next year we break it down by age so younger photographers in elementary or junior high aren’t competing with college kids.

“As we went through, each of us who were there judging wrote down our 10 favorite photos, and so everybody’s 10 favorites got pulled from the group and that ended up being around 50. Then we started looking at them and deciding, based upon that smaller grouping, which ones we wanted to keep and which ones by comparison didn’t quite match up.”

Cody said that besides himself, some of the other judges were “real bonafide artists” and some were active in the community. He said that they first narrowed their 10 favorites to five each, and then winnowed those down to the three that they liked best.

“It was just basically building a consensus.”

Generally, he was encouraged by the photographic skills that he saw.

“There was some stuff that was excellent,” he said. “I used to do photography when I was in college and so there were a few of them that I looked at and said, oh, if only that composition was just a little bit different, if you zoomed in perhaps and put your center — the point of interest — a little further to the left and up, the composition would have been killer.

“I wish I could have given feedback to everybody about, you know, constructive criticism — what I liked about the picture, where I thought it just missed the mark — maybe that could help them the next time they want to do something,” Cody concluded.

Cody said he is confident that the contest will be repeated next year.
