The Village of Palmetto Bay will conduct a groundbreaking ceremony for the new recreation center building at Coral Reef Park on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The cutting edge 5,000-square-foot facility will replace the original building constructed by the county which had developed serious structural flaws and had to be demolished. The ceremony will take place at noon and last about an hour.

The ceremony will include a brief program with special remarks by Village Mayor Karyn Cunningham, followed by the official groundbreaking ceremony. It will be an opportunity to celebrate the village’s commitment to “Investing in our Future: Building a Legacy of Excellence through Park Innovation.”

Parks and Recreation director Fanny Carmona is excited about the milestone event.

“The groundbreaking of our new recreation center marks a pivotal moment for Coral Reef Park,” Carmona said. “This facility will not only enhance our community’s recreational opportunities, but also serve as a hub for fostering connections and promoting healthy lifestyles.

“We’ll be using it for fitness classes, senior programs, teen events, as part of our summer camp program, and much more. We’re excited to see this vision come to life and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our residents for years to come,” Carmona added.

Mayor Cunningham said she was pleased that the project is about to begin.

“Ask any happy person about community, and they will describe their relationships with family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances,” Mayor Cunningham said. “The Recreation Center at Coral Reef Park truly symbolizes what I consider to be the heart of our village, a place for our amazing residents and families to gather, participate in activities, and enjoy all our park space.

“This is what Palmetto Bay is all about. It is long overdue, and I am deeply grateful to our manager and Parks director for their hard work, dedication and vision,” she added.
Coral Reef Park is located at 7895 SW 152 St. in Palmetto Bay.
